History of Epworth
On December 10, 1893 when Huntsville was a small cotton mill town of less than 8,000 people, Epworth was organized as Epworth Chapel, Methodist Episcopal Church South. There were 40 charter members. The church building was located on what is now Russell Street and Humes Avenue. This building was used by the Epworth congregation from 1893 until 1926. Financial support for the church and parsonage was provided by The Dallas Manufacturing Company. |
In 1926, a new church building was built on what is now the corner of Andrew Jackson Way and O’Shaughnessy. Again, The Dallas Manufacturing Company contributed to the building and provided a parsonage. The sanctuary was enlarged in 1945 and the congregation built its own parsonage in 1954. To keep pace with the rapidly growing space industry in Huntsville, a new facility was approved in 1958. The education building was completed in 1958 and was to serve as a combined sanctuary and education building until the new sanctuary could be built. Before construction started on the sanctuary, the congregation, led by Reverend Robert Morgan, determined that more land was needed for the required expansion and began looking for a new site. (Note: Both the 1893 and 1926 buildings no longer exist. The education building built in 1958 is the current United Way office on Andrew Jackson.) |

After considering several locations, the present 5-acre site (at Epworth Drive / US 72) was chosen and the sanctuary with classrooms underneath was built in 1964. The plan called for an education building with a fellowship hall and kitchen, but financial constraints delayed the building of the educational building. In 1972, several of the classrooms beneath the sanctuary were opened to provide a small fellowship hall and a storage area was converted into a small kitchen. Then in 1990, under the leadership of Dr. Andy Wolfe, the congregation approved construction of the long awaited educational building with general-purpose fellowship hall and commercial kitchen. The new facility was occupied and consecrated in December 1991. Since December 10, 1893, with 40 members, Epworth has grown into a congregation with over 900 members. With over 100 years experience, and literally built on solid rock, Epworth is ready and able to enter the next millennium making disciples of Jesus through nurture, outreach and worship. |
