The Order for Worship—Fourth Sunday in Lent

Prelude – Nicky Wilson, Organist

Call to Worship – Pastor Todd

Welcome – Pastor Todd

 † Hymn of Praise:

No. 92 – For the Beauty of the Earth

  • For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies;

Refrain:  Lord of all, thee we raise this hymn of grateful praise.

  • For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon, and stars of light;

Refrain:  Lord of all, thee we raise this hymn of grateful praise.

  • For the joy of ear and eye, for the heart and mind’s delight, for the mystic  harmony linking sense to sound and sight;

Refrain:  Lord of all, thee we raise this hymn of grateful praise.

  • For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild;

Refrain:  Lord of all, thee we raise this hymn of grateful praise.

  • For thy church, that evermore lifteth holy hands above, offering upon every shore her pure sacrifice of love;

Refrain:  Lord of all, thee we raise this hymn of grateful praise.

  • For thyself, best Give Divine, to the world so freely given, for that great, great love of thine, peach on earth, and joy in heaven:

Refrain:  Lord of all, thee we raise this hymn of grateful praise.

† Affirmation of Faith – Lenten Creed

We believe that our lives are held within the encircling love of God, who knows our names and recognizes our deepest needs.  We believe that Christ is the divine Child of the living God, and that his grace is like living waters that can never be exhausted.  We believe in the birthing, renewing, enabling Spirit of God who yearns over our welfare as a mother yearns for her child.  We believe that God is in the arid desert as well as in green pastures, and that hard times and disciplines are also loving gifts.  We believe that our journey has a purpose and a destination, and that our path leads to a human glory we cannot yet imagine.  We believe that in the church we are fellow pilgrims on the road, and that we are called to love one another as God loves us. This is our faith and we are humbled to profess in Jesus the Christ.  Amen.

† Gloria Patria

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

Children’s Moment – Kelly Priest

Congregational Prayer – Pastor Todd

Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen

† Hymn of Praise:

No. 463 – Lord, Speak to Me

  1. Lord, speak to me, that I may speak in living echoes of thy tone; as thou hast sought, so let me seek thine erring children lost and lone.
  2. O strengthen me, that while I stand firm on the rock, and strong in thee, I may stretch out a loving hand to wrestlers with the troubled sea.
  3. O teach me, Lord, that I may teach the precious things thou dost impart; and wing my words, that they may reach the hidden depths of many a heart.
  4. O fill me with thy fullness, Lord, until my very heart o’er-flow in kindling thought and flowing word, thy love to tell, they praise to show.
  5. O use me, Lord, use even me, just as thou wilt, and when, and where, until they blessed face I see, thy rest, thy joy, thy glory share.

† Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Scripture – 1 Kings 19:4-18 – Reverend Sherill Clontz

Sermon – “Listen” – Reverend Sherill Clontz

 † Hymn of Dedication:

No.  377 – It Is Well with My Soul

  • When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like a sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.

Refrain: It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.

  • Though Satan should buffet, tough trials should come, let this blest assurance control, that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed his own blood for my soul.

Refrain:  It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.

  • My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!  My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

Refrain:  It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.

  • And, Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds be rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descent, even so, it is well with my soul.

Refrain:   It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.

† Benediction

 † You are invited to stand. Yes, we know you are at home, but you are still invited to stand!

4th Sunday in Lent

LENTEN DISCIPLINES FOR THE WEEK

3/22 – Theme “Listen”; Bring a rock to the foot of the cross.

3/23 – When you are in a conversation today, intentionally try not to be responding to that person in your own head while they talk.

3/24 – Today give someone a gift of your full attention.

3/25 – Spend 10 minutes in quiet solitude, simply listening to God.

3/26 – Prayer – The Ship of Life. (See below)

3/27 – 1 Kings 19

3/28 – Take time to listen to someone today who has some kind of story to share.

THE SHIP OF LIFE

Steer the ship of my life, good Lord, to your quiet Harbour, where I can be safe from the storms of sin and conflict.  Show me the course I should take.  Renew in me the gift of discernment, so that I can always see the right direction in which I should go.  And give me the strength and the courage to choose the right course, even when the sea is rough and the waves are high, know that through enduring hardship and danger in your name we shall find comfort and peace.
